Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Technologies and Functions

Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Technologies and Functions

Back from the press presentation of the new full frame DSLR Canon EOS 5D Mark III (the link to our presentation), we publish the comprehensive presentation of the technologies implemented on the machine.
We open with a picture of the structure of the new camera, very robust because it is made of magnesium alloy and built around an aluminum chassis. Externally the car is little changed compared to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, however, because historical first car brand (only surpassed by the more "old Niikon D90) one offering HD video recording day.

New Full Frame CMOS sensor 22.3 megapixel

Canon has designed and manufactured in its full frame CMOS sensor with 22.3 megapixels, a resolution that will print rich in detail up to A2.
The new architecture of CMOS promises wider dynamic range and low noise, as well as lower power consumption.
New photodiodes with optimized transistors within each pixel offer superior sensitivity to light, while microlenses with no gaps (gapless) provide greater light-gathering capabilities for better image quality in low light conditions.
The sensor incorporates an advanced technology of noise reduction on each pixel.
The read-out 8-channel high-speed combines with Canon's DIGIC image processor 5 + for speed shooting up to 6 frames per second at full resolution, up to 16,270 JPEG or 18 RAW files.

DIGIC 5 +: 6 Photo / Second

Canon EOS 5D Mark promises with the same quality III with 2 stop advantage. Thanks to DIGIC 5 + are supported with multiple exposure shots and HDR, as well as in-camera correction of chromatic aberration and lateral axial lens for each image, even shooting at full speed.
DIGIC 5 + works with a buffer memory for high-speed DDR-SDRAM. This allows reading, processing, compressing and writing image data into the buffer to be empty even during long bursts.
DIGIC 5 + also supports a playback feature comparison, which allows the photographer to, view and zoom in to display two images simultaneously.

Autofocus system with 61 points - Improved AF Tracking

The 61-point wide area AF extended the EOS 5D Mark II is the same as the new flagship Canon EOS-1D X. Used in combination with an AF sensor for correction of the light source, a powerful microcomputer AF and AF algorithm, promises accurate focusing even when the "chase" a moving subject.
The AF sensor has 41 points and 5 double-cross point cross with a maximum aperture at f / 2.8. As EOS-1D X, even EOS 5D Mark III is able to detect a subject completely out of focus by using the whole sensor, rather than a single focus point, ensuring a prompt AF control at all times.
A series of preset AF provides greater reliability when shooting critical scenes and subjects. Canon has created 6 different models that can be personalized with the built-in AF configuration tool:

- Model 1 - Set Multi "setting" classic, ideal for most individuals.
- Model 2 - continuous tracking of individuals, ignoring possible obstacles designed to continue to monitor the subject even when it moves momentarily out of focus points.
- Model 3 - Focus instant entrants suddenly the focus point: the subject can focus when focus instantly detected. Very effective when photographing different subjects, one after another, as in skiing or departure of a bicycle race.
- Model 4 - For those that speed up or slow down quickly: designed for tracking moving subjects that could suddenly change speed and direction, as in motor sports in the curve or in rugby.
- Model 5 - For those with irregular movement in all directions for use only with AF and automatic selection to 61 points, Zone AF mode and AF point expansion. Ideal setting for continuous tracking of individuals who can move quickly up and down and left and right while shooting. The most common shooting situations include skating and air races.
- Model 6 - For those who change speeds and move erratically: for use only with AF and automatic selection to 61 points, Zone AF mode and AF point expansion. This setting is similar to that of the model 4, but is used when using multiple focus points. Allows tracking of subject movement, automatically selecting the AF points. Ideal for basketball or gymnastics.

AI Servo AF III - AI Servo AF uses a form of artificial intelligence (AI) to determine the speed and direction of moving subjects and focus when focus the lens at the expected position in order to increase the chances of getting a clear shot at the 'exposure.
AI Servo III is now more effective in "trace" moving subjects in difficult situations. The 'improved user interface simplifies the customization AI Servo AF.
Canon has improved the performance of predictive focus taking into account the views of professional photographers. Parameters such as "tracking sensitivity," "acceleration / deceleration of the tracking" and "AF point selection", can be easily adjusted.

Measurement System Canon iFCL to 63 ZonesEOS 5D Mark III employs the measurement system Canon iFCL with measuring sensor with double-layer 63 areas, connected to each of the 61 points AF. EOS 5D Mark II offers four metering modes: Evaluative, Partial, Spot (center) and Centre-weighted average. The sensor measures the light in the wavelengths red-green and blue-green to counteract the typical underexposure of subjects within the red wavelengths. The measurement system supplied with the EOS 5D Mark II uses two algorithms for more accurate results. The evaluative metering algorithm covers the 61 AF points and AF areas. With automatic AF point selection, the camera switches to an algorithm that uses the information focus of all 61 AF points. To make the automatic settings of the flash more accurate, the algorithm on the flash light automatic E-TTL II now includes information on the subject-target distance for better exposure and ensure an adequate level of flash to capture a subject well exposed.Picture StylePicture Style presets allow you to get immediately usable JPEG images without need of additional intervention. They can be likened to different film types, each with a particular effect. Each setting allows the photographer to control sharpness, contrast, color tone and saturation.Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image can be revised with Canon's Digital Photo Professional software. The six presets by default:- Standard: for crisp, vibrant images- Portrait: optimizes color tone and saturation, to achieve attractive skin tones- Landscape: for punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to give and to mountain, tree and building outlines profiles determined- Neutral: ideal for post-processing- Faithful: adjusts color to match those of the subject, for shots with a color temperature of 5200K- Monochrome: for black and white shooting with a wide range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple and green).Picture Style Auto - In addition to the preset Picture Style, EOS 5D Mark II includes Auto Picture Style, which offers an automatic and precise color control within each scene based on information taken from the EOS Scene Detection.Auto Lighting OptimizerAuto Lighting Optimizer (ALO) automatically corrects brightness and contrast of the images suffer from underexposure, low contrast or backlight, assisted by the face detection technology. With low noise and processing algorithms of DIGIC 5 +, the correction is performed without altering the natural grade.EOS 5D Mark II now incorporates the EOS Scene Detection technology to achieve the best balance between brightness and contrast to photos taken in unusual conditions, including sunsets and high saturations. When used with evaluative metering, Auto Lighting Optimizer ensures the correct exposure is the subject of both the background.
